IPRT Cross-Party Hustings on Penal Reform

The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) held a cross-party hustings event on penal reform event in the lead-up to the upcoming General Election. The event took place on Wednesday 20 November 2024. You can watch the recording of the event on our YouTube.

The hustings gave voters an opportunity to hear directly from political candidates about their positions on critical issues related to the prisons and the wider criminal justice system. By facilitating this discussion, we aimed to ensure that penal reform remains a priority in the political agenda and that it empowers the public to make informed choices at the ballot box.

Speakers included sitting TDs and candidates from a number of parties currently represented in Dáil Eireann, outlining what they would do to support progressive penal reform if elected to the next government.

The event was chaired by IPRT Executive Director, Saoirse Brady, and the speakers in attendance were as follows:

  • Aengus Ó Snodaigh (Sinn Féin)
  • Patrick Costello (Green Party)
  • Sinead Gibney (Social Democrats)
  • Aodhán Ó Riordáin (Labour Party)
  • Jim O’Callaghan (Fianna Fáil)

You can watch the recording of the event on our YouTube.

Before the event we asked candidates and representatives to outline their party's manifesto priorities on criminal justice and the penal system for General Election 2024 in short videsos. You can view and share the short videos on our social media linked below.
