Party manifesto analysis 2024: People Before Profit

People Before Profit launched their election manifesto, Another Ireland is Possible, on Thursday 14 November 2024.

The manifesto does not specifically address crime, sentencing or prison issues. It does, however, outline comprehensive positions on drug decriminalisation. While recognising that treatment may not be necessary or appropriate in all cases, the diversion of those convicted of drug possession offences away from the criminal justice system into appropriate community-based treatments, where appropriate, would reduce some of the strains on the prison system. IPRT believes that criminalisation and imprisonment for drugs possession is neither effective nor an efficient use of resources and that a health-led response is more appropriate, as outlined in the Interim Report by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Drugs Use published in October 2024.
