Guardian: Where's the victim support for troubled perpetrators?

Young offenders, in a culture which seeks to demonise them and brand them as an anti-social 'yoof' plague, are themselves the forgotten victims of society.

Mark Johnson, in an article in The Guardian, highlights the pathways into crime that have become a well trod road for many of society's most disadvantaged and excluded members. In a moving interview with a 14-year-old housed in a secure unit, the interplay of alcoholism, illegal drug dependence and a chaotic family life emerge as an almost overwhelming force channeling the young person into crime.

There is very little help for these children, and this unfortunate reality will continue until their vulnerability is recognised and commitments are made to make a difference in the lives of children who grow up with little hope.
