As part of its 'Out of Trouble' campaign, which aims to reduce the number of imprisoned children and young people in the UK, the Prison Reform Trust has published a report highlighting the reforms which it believes are needed in order to reduce reoffending by young adults.
The report argues that despite the fact that young adults are disproportionately responsible for many offences, the criminal justice system is simply not doing enough to prevent them from falling into a pattern of offending.
The report ultimately recommends various reforms, including: a community sentence tailored to the needs of those in this age bracket, the use of restorative justice as a method of diversion from the formal criminal justice system, and the development of sentencing guidelines specific to young adults.
