Irish Examiner: Call for Ombudsman to hear prisoner complaints

7th June 2011

Today's Irish Examiner reports on the concluding observations by the UNCAT following Ireland's examination late last month.

Among the recommendations, the Examiner reports, the UN Committee Against Torture has urged the State to establish a prisoner complaints system as it is essential in the prevention of ill-treatment of prisoners.

IPRT's Liam Herrick was included in the article, which states:

"Mr Herrick said bodies such as the Garda Ombudsman and prison ombudsman bodies in Britain and in the North were a testament to their success and necessity. "

The article also reports on concern raised by the Committee in relation to the detention of children in St.Patrick's Institution, urging the government to proceed with building a new detention centre in Lusk 'without delay'.
