This article, in today's edition of the Irish Times, reports on Joint shadow report of Ireland under the UN convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment which will be presented this Friday by the Irish Penal Reform Trust and the Irish Council of Civil Liberties.
The report will be presented to the UN Committee against torture as part of a monitoring process which is examining Ireland's record on human rights issues such as torture and other ill treatment, the article goes on to say.
'A Government delegation led by secretary general of the Department of Justice Seán Aylward will answer questions about the State’s record at public hearings on May 23rd and 24th in Geneva.'
Highlighted in the article, are a number of recommendations made by IPRT and the ICCL which would help Ireland to meet it's human rights obligations under UN treaties.The joint shadow report emphasizes various practices which must cease in Ireland including; imprisoning children in St. Patrick's Institution, the lack of in-cell sanitation in a quarter of Irish prisons, the detention of asylum seekers and the mentally ill.
