IPRT Executive Director Liam Herrick outlined on Midwest Radio how a more structured temporary release system is needed to better meet the needs of the community as well as prisoners. The current system of temporary release has been ad hoc, leading to many people being released before they are fully suitable. While the recent Community Return Scheme has been a successful step in reducing overcrowding in a phased approach, the current parole system requires urgent reform to ensure a fair process that is independent of government.
Respect for rights in the penal system with prison as a last resort.
