Niamh McCormack spoke to Angela Noone-Faull of CRCfm on The Chatroom, highlighting why Ireland needs real alternatives to short prison sentences.
With 77% of committals to prison in 2024 for periods of 12 months or less, and concerns about rates of mental illness, addiction, psychosis and self-harm in Irish prisons, it’s clear that prison is failing those with serious health needs.
Without proper supports, people will continue to move through the revolving door of the justice system, without achieving rehabilitation or recovery — which helps neither them nor society.
