RTÉ: Prison overcrowding 'extremely concerning', says Irish Penal Reform Trust
24th April 2025
On 24 April 2025, the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) Executive Director, Saoirse Brady, spoke to RTÉ's Edel McAllister about the increasing prison overcrowding crisis.
She warned that overcrowding has been persistent since 2023 and has led to unacceptable, degrading and dehumanising conditions in prisons. Many people are sleeping on mattresses on the floor, some people are in a cell of four people, all of which is increasing tensions and ensuring people are living in inhumane and degrading conditions.
