RTÉ Today with Claire Byrne: Could we ease prison overcrowding by following the UK’s early release plan?

On 23 October 2024, Irish Penal Reform Trust Executive Director, Saoirse Brady, spoke to Colm Ó' Mongáin on RTÉ Radio 1 Today with Claire Byrne show about solutions to the prison overcrowding crisis.

Colm first spoke with Kevin Maguire, Associate Editor at the Daily Mirror who discussed the UK’s early release plan ease prison overcrowding, saying its more about capacity than compassion.

Saoirse said much of what Kevin said applies to Ireland and referenced the 12 prioirty actions outline in the recently released Prison Overcrowding Response Group report. She said the Minister was told by key agencies in the report that we were in a much worse crisis sitution than in Britian before we even hit the 5,000 people in prison in Ireland mark.
