IPRT Submission to the Consultation on Jury Reform

6th December 2024

On 6 December 2024, IPRT made a submission to the Department of Justice Consultation on Jury Reform.

The submission is in response to the Department of Justice Consultation Paper on Jury Reform, which was informed by recommendations made by the Law Reform Commission (LRC) in their 2013 Report on Jury Service. In total, the Report made 56 recommendations, a number of which have already been implemented. The consultation paper was informed by the remaining LRC recommendations.

IPRT's observations relate mainly to the issues highlighted in Chapter Five of the consultation document, including disqualification from jury service based on the type of offence, sentence received, the time since the offending occurred, and the approach to persons on remand.
