This article portrays the Combat Poverty Agency’s appreciation for the establishment of the long needed National Crime Forum for the creation of public policy on crime and the responses to crime. The Forum builds on the Department of Justice discussion paper on tackling crime published in May 1997. These two initiatives, along with the proposed Crime Council, signal an increased willingness by the government, and the Department of Justice in particular, to engage in a public discussion and review of the nature and causes of crime and the effectiveness of the policy response.
