A new two-part documentary series, filmed behind the walls of Ireland's women prisons, Women on the Inside depicts life inside Ireland's two female prisons. It will be broadcast on RTÉ 1 at 9.35pm on 8th and 15th September.
The documentary comes from Midas Productions, the same team that created the award-winning Life on the Inside, which was screened in February 2013. Also filmed over the course of a year, Life on the Inside explored life behind bars through the eyes of prisoner and prison officer in Wheatfield and Shelton Abbey prisons. It was a finely balanced documentary, which presented the realities of prison.
IPRT believes these documentaries play a crucial role in showing the realities of prison to Irish audiences, whose idea of prison can be largely based on what they have encountered in the movies. Prisoners in Ireland do not wear orange jumpsuits, but nor do they eat their meals together in large communal areas (apart from Ireland's two open prisons, and the Dóchas Centre). There are plenty of myths about prisons and prisoners in Ireland, which these documentaries aim to challenge.
Tune in to RTÉ 1 at 9.35pm on Mon 8th Sept and Mon 15th Sept 2014.
