Census of Prison Population, Cell Occupancy and In-Cell Sanitation July 2015

The Irish Prison Service Statistics Office has recently published its quarterly statistical analysis of prison population, cell occupancy and in-cell sanitation facts and figures for July of 2015.

The quarterly report provides information on the numbers of usable cells in each institution, the number of cells that accommodated one, two, three and four or more prisoners, the number of prisoners without access to in-cell sanitation and the number of prisoners who were required to use toilet facilities in the presence of others. 

Some of the key findings highlighted by the census include:

•There were 3,802 prisoners in custody at the time of reporting;

•2,067 (54%) prisoners were accommodated in single cells;

•725 cells accommodated 2 prisoners (1,450 prisoners);

•77 cells accommodated 3 prisoners (231 prisoners);

•11 cells accommodated 4 or more prisoners (54 prisoners);

•312 prisoners (8%) were required to slop out;

•1,391 prisoners (37%) were required to use the toilet in the presence of another prisoner;

•2,099 (55%) prisoners were in a single cell with a flush toilet or had access to toilet facilities in private at all times.
