The Irish Prison Service Statistics Office has recently published its quarterly census of Restricted Prisoners in the Irish prison system. The census figures indicate that the number of prisoners on restricted regimes has increased by 98 in the overall figure compared to July of 2015.
Some of the key findings highlighted by the census include:
•Of the 1,010 prisoners classified as protection prisoners only 332 had their regimes within the prisons restricted (Rule 63).
•399 prisoners in total were subject to a restricted regime
•332 (8.7% of prison total population of 3,802) of prisoners on protection (Rule 63) 329 were on protection based on their own request.
•40 prisoners were on restricted regimes on grounds of order within the prison system (Rule 62)
•1 prisoner was put on a restricted regime due to discipline (Rule 67, Part 3 Prisons Act 2007).
