IPRT's AGM for 2008 will take place at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin at 4.30pm on Monday May 19th. The AGM will elect the Board of Directors of IPRT and will approve a Strategic Plan for the organisation for the period 2008-2010. The AGM is open to all members of IPRT.
IPRT is also delighted to announce that the AGM will be followed by our Annual Lecture for 2008, given this year by Anne Owers, Chief Inspector with HM Inspector of Prisons for England and Wales. This Lecture is open to the general public and
Anne was appointed HM Chief Inspector of Prisons in 2001. HM Chief Inspector of Prisons is appointed by the Home Secretary (now the Justice Secretary) to inspect Prison Service establishments in England and Wales and to report on the treatment of prisoners and the conditions in which they are held. During her time in office Anne has made a major contribution to the evolution of accountability in the prison system of England and Wales. Before taking up this post Anne was Director of JUSTICE, a leading independent legal human rights NGO for nine years. During that time she was a member of various Government committees including the Home Office Task Force on the implementation of the Human Rights Act and carried out work on human rights, asylum and the provision of legal services. The topic of Anne's paper will be "Prisons inspection and the protection of human rights".
