Prison Law Seminar Series: 'Litigating Prison Conditions'

13th July 2010

The sixth in our Prison Law seminar series took place on 13th July, 2010 on the topic 'Litigating Prison Conditions'.

The focus of the seminar was on current substantive and procedural issues around litigating prison conditions. Speakers Paul O'Higgins SC and Michael Lynn BL both spoke about their recent involvement in significant actions around prison conditions (slopping out and prison overcrowding), drawing on both constitutional and ECHR arguments, while Des Hogan of the IHRC presented a paper on the potential role of the Irish Human Rights Commission in prison related actions.

The seminar built upon the recent prison law seminar which addressed the procedural issues surrounding the application of the ECHR Act in a prison law context. The event was very well attended and successfully highlighted some of the key issues involved in litigation prison conditions in Ireland and other European countries.
