The casual labelling of two teenage boys, by a judge, as 'absolute scum' almost passed by without notice. Had it not been for the offence caused to one of the court clerks, the comment would surely have been unremarkable and quickly forgotten.
What does it say about the position and public perception of young offenders in England, that a magistrate can not only describe them as scum, but then do the rounds of talk shows defending his position, garnering support in the process?
