IPRT attendance at 93rd pre-session of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child
27th September 2022
The 93rd pre-session of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child for Ireland took place on 27 September 2022.
The pre-session provides civil society with the opportunity to appear before the Committee to share information and concerns in advance of the Committee’s country session with Ireland’s representatives. IPRT attended this pre-session remotely to share our concerns arising in regards the administration of youth justice and the particular challenges facing children with a family member in prison in Ireland. We were delighted to particularly flag our concerns around the overrepresentation of young people from minority ethnic groups in the criminal justice system; teacher training in diversity; the administration of child justice; and raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14.
The 92nd session of the Committee, at which Ireland’s state representatives will appear before the Committee for review, will take place on 24 and 25 January 2023. IPRT plans to attend this session in person.
You can find IPRT’s written statement submitted to the Committee in advance of the pre-session here.
